Story Behind the Song
As a songwriter, life always gives us plenty to write about. The ups and downs, the ins and outs and the good and the bad all come together to make a song. Even the weather can greatly affect inspiration and feelings that can be turned into beautiful chords and lyrics.
On October 10, 2018, the face of my home state of Florida was changed forever as a category five hurricane made landfall as one of the biggest storms in history. Places that I grew up were completely destroyed and many people lost everything. As we sat without power, the silence was deafening. I realized in the silence there was something special happening. I noticed families and people who were disconnected now connecting more than before the storm.
While myself and others came together to gather goods and supplies to deliver to storm victims, I began to see a powerful thing called, "the heart of the storm." Here I was surrounded by people with nothing more than the shirts on their backs, working day in and day out to help a neighbor or someone in need before themselves. It really was beautiful and inspiring and proof of “the strength of the human spirit.”
After a long day of volunteering, I picked up my old guitar, sat on the front steps of my porch and started playing a few chords that fit the mood of the day. As I was playing, the words "heart of the storm" came back to me again. I asked myself, what do we do now? Well it was obvious. We come together, we fall apart and through it all somehow we find a new place to start. The song at that point seemed to write itself. In just a few minutes I felt like I had something special, so I made my way to my phone to make a voice memo. I didn't want to forget what I had c0me up with.
That was the day the seed was planted, and it has now grown into a beautiful tree. It has been one year since that day and here we are set to release a song that I pray will bring people together and open the eyes of others to see the good in a bad situation.
No matter what the circumstances may be, there will always be heroes without a mask and without a cape. Just people wanting to help people and rebuild what once was. In a dark place there is a light called the ‘Heart of the Storm.” It will always be there and it will never die. ~ Eric Durrance
